You can’t just give people a brochure. No one gets better with one visit to the doctor. It’s all about trying this, tweaking that, improving this, and avoiding that. It's the process of care. The surgery is just part of that process of care, but it's not the whole deal.

Expertise

Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Michael Talbot was among the first surgeons in Australia to perform the sleeve gastrectomy in 2004, and has since built a high-volume sleeve and complex upper-GI practice. His team is one of the few in Australia that routinely offers sleeve alongside bypass, band, ESG and full revision capability, so patients get the option that genuinely fits. The practice is an SRC-accredited Centre of Excellence in Bariatric Surgery, reflecting systems and outcomes built over decades.

Gastric Bypass Surgery

Michael Talbot began performing gastric bypass in 2003 and was an early adopter of laparoscopic techniques, contributing to one of Australia’s longest-running high-volume bypass programs. He offers both Roux-en-Y and mini/one-anastomosis bypass, with extensive experience selecting the right configuration for anatomy, reflux risk and goals. He holds the SRC Master Surgeon in Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

Bariatric Revision Surgery

Revision is a signature part of Dr Talbot’s work: he has performed more revision weight-loss procedures than any other bariatric surgeon in NSW. His specialities include a structured assessment of weight regain and complications for patients, as well as ongoing research into techniques that reduce revisional risk (e.g., adhesion-barrier strategies after failed banding).

Robotic Bariatric Surgery

A/Prof Michael Talbot is a pioneer of robotic bariatric surgery in Australia, performing early national cases on both the da Vinci and Medtronic Hugo platforms and regularly training other surgeons in contemporary techniques. He uses robotics when it delivers a clear advantage, particularly for redo sleeve/bypass, large or complex hiatus/para-oesophageal hernias, and operations in scarred or cramped fields.

Endoscopic Sleeve
Gastroplasty

As both an interventional endoscopist and bariatric surgeon, Michael Talbot offers ESG within the same high-volume program that delivers sleeves, bypass and complex revisions. He uses physiology-led assessment to select ESG for patients who want an incisionless option or a staged pathway, with escalation to surgery only when it adds clear benefit.

Gastric Band
LAP-Band Surgery

Michael Talbot started performing gastric band surgery in 2003 and has managed thousands of banded patients across the full band lifecycle: placement, aftercare and, where necessary, conversion. He has exceptional revision expertise (including after failed bands) in NSW, giving patients a clear roadmap when long-term issues arise.

Gastric Balloon

Michael Talbot offers a gastric balloon as a less-invasive, temporary option that slows eating and suppresses appetite, typically left in place up to six months (sometimes 12). It’s used selectively after specialist assessment, with dietetic support and a longer-term plan (medication, ESG or surgery) where appropriate.
